Sea Change in the Election Campaign
This article from the New York Times talks about the huge changes in this election campaign, and that "Among the biggest changes this year is the intense new interest in politics, reflected in jumps in voters registration, early voting and attendance at Mr. Obama’s rallies. To no small extent, that is a reflection on the unusual interest stirred by his campaign. Thus, it is hardly clear that a future candidate who appropriated all the innovations that Mr. Obama and his campaign tried would necessarily have the same success as Mr. Obama."

Media representations

Link to a website for teaching
Have been going through some Phantom comics collecting images of 'beautiful' women and how they are represented. Currently working on this for the Year 12 unit standard 7465 Investigate the ways individuals, groups, and issues are represented in the media. Am hoping to use the comic representations of women to get some ideas going - maybe try a forum/wiki with this group.

Cockroach story
Those of you who didn't manage to make it to media breakfast this a.m. would have missed all the excitement, so I'll share the story with you here.
A cockroach (who shall remain nameless and who is no longer with us anyway) A cockroach (humungous ba..ard) jumped/fell/flew from the top shelf in the library kitchen when I pushed a cup in, it landed on (almost) the toaster which was hot because there was toast cooking in it, and then it honest to god jumped in an instant from the toaster into the sink which was full of HOT soapy water. I totally expected it to come flying back up out of there so I watched for ages but it didn't - phew. It's still lying dead on it's back in the water waiting for one of us to bury it - or it was until a braver librarian than me turned up!! Shannon and Michelle can vouch for the truth of this because they were there.

Wiki article
Useful article on use of wikis
In today's herald (July 4, 2006) a comment by the technology and telecom dude Peter Nowak - "What I do hate is the company's (Telecom) habit of saying one thing and doing the opposite, and there are many examples of this. A good one was when the Narnia movie came out. Telecom issued a press release patting itself on the back for the good job it had done in providing the connectivity for the production. The Screen Council was virtually apopleptic. Sure, Peter Jackson and the other big films can affordtop-notch service, but the accompanying production industry that was expected to develop after Lord of the Rings hasn't happened because of poor and expensive broadband. The work has gone elsewhere."

Julie Christie info
This is the new reality tv show you can join to 'beg' for money!
Another one which talks about Julie Christie's company Touchdown which is now Eyeworks Touchdown (I'll try to find more).
Sale of format - you'll find this one interesting in light of Geoff's presentation too.

Fantasy blockbuster movies

One of the topics we focussed on last year was the fantasy blockbuster film industry in New Zealand - keep an eye out for anything on this topic. I have a collection of articles in mags that need photocopying/scanning for addition to your folders.

Must read for schol students
Great essay for you to hook into - remember to keep a record (bibliography) of all materials; it's a killer when you have to go back and look for them later!
Just copy and paste the reference info onto a word file - I usually have one on my desktop so I can just keep adding to it - let me know if you need help with this
